Transfer of Care Pilot - Improving Service Levels in Hospitals recipientsPatients waiting for an ambulance to arrive in emergency situations can be at high risk and extremely vulnerable. Therefore, the capacity of NSW Ambulance to respond to patients is vital. The Transfer of Care project aimed to improve the turnaround time of paramedics from the Emergency Department, thereby increasing their capacity to respond. During the winter of 2015, a Transfer of Care pilot commenced in Sydney Local Health District hospitals. Patient care was transferred to experienced Emergency Department nurses and paramedics were released. Notably, over a ten-week period, 2000 hours of paramedic time was saved, an 18% improvement in Transfer of Care performance, and improvement demonstrated in Triage 2, 3 and 4 performance.
