Transfer of Care - Ambulance offload improvements at John Hunter Hospital Emergency Department - Improving Service Levels in Hospitals recipientsHistorically a number of strategies have been implemented with a view of improving ambulance transfer of care times in John Hunter Hospital Emergency Department (JHHED). With the patient as the primary focus as part of a reform in 2013, the Department committed to expedite their journey while concurrently delivering safe, efficient patient care. A greater commitment to transfer of care was demonstrated through the reinforcement of dedicated nursing roles in a specified ambulance offload area, a recognised direct line of early escalation and improved communication and multidisciplinary relationships with the NSW Ambulance Service. Consequently, these strategies have seen the JHHED consistently achieve transfer of care performance greater than 90% for 2016, with a current average of 93% and average off-stretcher time of 10.9 minutes.
