Domestic Violence Evidence in Chief (DVEC) - Reducing Domestic Violence recipient

The justice system recognises that domestic violence victims in criminal proceedings are at particular risk of re-traumatisation by the court process. These concerns led to the development of the Domestic Violence Evidence in Chief (DVEC) strategy. The strategy involves

the video recording of a domestic violence victim’s actual verbal evidence at the scene, which is then played in court as their primary evidence. It is an Australian and a world first in its legislative construction. The Domestic and Family Violence Team planned and implemented this complex strategy with requirements for changes to IT systems, education/training and cultural change. After 12 months the results indicate that DVEC has been a success with serious headway being made in assisting victims of domestic violence and addressing offending behaviour.
