Kempsey bypass – Pacific Highway upgrade
Roads and Maritime Services
The $618 million, 14.5km Kempsey bypass comprises stage one of the 40km Kempsey to Eungai Pacific Highway upgrade. Roads and Maritime Services formed the Kempsey Bypass Alliance with Leighton Contractors, AECOM and Coffey Geotechnics to build the bypass. Abigroup was awarded a separate contract to design and build the 3.2km Macleay River and floodplain bridge – the longest road bridge in Australia. Major work on the bypass started in July 2010 and opened to traffic in March 2013 – more than a year ahead of schedule. The project delivered innovative solutions to major engineering challenges, greatly enhanced scope for the same budget, created significant safety and travel time benefits, and used a collaborative procurement approach that fostered partnership at all levels.
