Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre – Police Rescue Dog Training
Strengthening the Environment and Communities

Attorney General & Justice
Detainees at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre assist in training search and rescue dogs with the guidance of the NSW Police Search and Rescue Unit. The program improves community safety by providing NSW Police with assistance in training the search and rescue dogs. The partnership also improves relationships between detainees and police. Police attend the centre to guide detainees in basic training techniques and also provide mentoring. For most detainees this is the first positive interaction they have ever had with the police. The program improves the discipline, communication and team work skills of the participants, reducing the risk of their reoffending and extending the benefits out to communities.
