What makes an individual eligible?

To be considered the individual must be a current public sector employee.

Award categories

In 2017 the Premier’s Awards had twelve categories to showcase achievements and progress towards the NSW Premier’s priorities.

The twelve categories are listed below. Both teams and individuals are eligible to be nominated for any of the following categories.

Improving government services

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • improve customer satisfaction with government services (supporting the Premier’s priority to improve customer satisfaction with key government services every year, this term of government)
  • deliver services that respond to community and customer needs
  • deliver services that demonstrate dedication, efficiency and customer focus

Driving public sector diversity

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • contribute to increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and women in senior leadership roles in the government sector (supporting the Premier’s priority to double the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in senior leadership roles, and increase the proportion of women in senior leadership roles to 50% in the government sector in the next 10 years)
  • build the pipeline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees aspiring to senior leadership roles
  • build the pipeline of women aspiring to senior leadership roles
  • build the foundations and enablers for a diverse and inclusive workforce
  • show outstanding inclusive leadership which develops future leaders

Creating jobs

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • contribute to the creation of new jobs in NSW (supporting the Premier’s priority to create 150,000 new jobs by 2019)
  • attract business to NSW
  • create jobs in NSW, and particularly in Regional NSW
  • deliver training and development opportunities that support employment outcomes
  • increase employment outcomes for young people, Aboriginal people, and people with disability

Reducing domestic violence

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • reduce the number of domestic violence perpetrators who re-offend (supporting the Premier’s priority to reduce by 5% the proportion of domestic violence perpetrators re-offending within 12 months)
  • deliver long term culture change to prevent domestic violence
  • change offender behaviour
  • support vulnerable women and families

Improving service levels in hospitals

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • lead to more patients going through emergency departments within four hours (supporting the Premier’s Priority to achieve 81% of patients through emergency departments within four hours).
  • improve patient and staff safety and quality in emergency departments
  • enhance whole of hospital and integrated care programs
  • reduce waiting times for patients
  • improve patient flow through the hospital
  • improve ambulance offload times of patients to the emergency department
  • improve service and access to healthcare in Regional NSW

Tackling childhood obesity

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • lead to a reduction in overweight and obesity rates of children (supporting the Premier’s Priority to reduce overweight and obesity rates of children by 5% over 10 years)
  • support overweight or obese children and their families, resulting in improved health and wellbeing
  • promote healthy eating and physical activity to children and families
  • create inclusive and enjoyable activities for children that improve fitness levels
  • promote community engagement in healthy eating and/or active living

Improving education results

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • increase the number of NSW students in the top two NAPLAN bands (supporting the Premier’s Priority to increase the proportion of NSW students in the top two NAPLAN bands by 8% by 2019)
  • result in improved literacy and numeracy skills among NSW students
  • increase retention of NSW students in schools
  • increase the uptake of further study

Protecting our kids

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • reduce the number of children and young people re-reported at risk of significant harm (supporting the Premier’s Priority to decrease the percentage of children & young people re-reported at risk of significant harm by 15%)
  • decrease the risk of significant harm to children
  • lead to better prevention, detection and investigation of situations where children may be at risk

Reducing youth homelessness

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • support more young people to successfully move from Specialist Homelessness Services to long-term accommodation (supporting the Premier’s Priority to increase the proportion of young people who successfully move from Specialist Homelessness Services to long-term accommodation by 10 percent)
  • provide prevention or early intervention support for young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, resulting in ongoing provision of stable accommodation
  • help transition more young homeless people from homelessness to stable long-term accommodation
  • improve access to education, training, and healthcare for homeless young people

Keeping our environment clean

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • contribute to reducing the volume of litter in the state (supporting the Premier’s Priority to reduce the volume of litter by 40% by 2020)
  • promote community engagement and activity to reduce litter in local areas
  • conserve and protect the environment
  • increase recycling
  • improve sustainable waste management

Building infrastructure

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • result in key infrastructure projects being delivered on time and on budget across the state (supporting the Premier’s Priority on Building Infrastructure)
  • result in key infrastructure projects that deliver to communities and achieve government objectives
  • increase community support for projects due to exceptional engagement with stakeholders and communities

Faster housing approvals

Programs/initiatives/innovations/improvements that:

  • lead to more housing approvals being determined within 40 days (supporting the Premier’s Priority to achieve ninety per cent of housing approvals determined within 40 days)
  • increase housing supply
  • make it easier for people to find or build homes to suit their lifestyle

Who can nominate?

Public sector agencies or their partners can nominate through the Award Ambassador.

How are winners selected?

Award panels, comprising senior representatives from the public, community and business sectors assess the nominations according to the criteria below and select finalists in each award category. A judging committee, comprising the Public Service Commissioner, the Customer Service Commissioner, the Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet and a non-Government chief executive, will consider the finalists and recommend winners in each category to the Premier for the final decision.

Nominations must comprise of a response to the following criteria, of no more than 200 words per heading:

Benefits/Results (40%)

  • How did the project or initiative contribute to the Premier's Priority target/goal?
  • Positive impact and results on the community/NSW
  • Better services and outcomes to individuals/business/community/State

Measures (20%)

  • Benefits expected
  • Problems to be solved
  • How has the project been evaluated/ what benchmarks were set to measure this against?
  • How do the results compare against expected results/benchmarks? Does this exceed expectations and if so, how? If not, how will benefits improve in future.?

Longer Term Benefits (10%)

  • Can the work be used in other parts of the sector or for other types of projects?
  • Is the project or initiative scalable? Give examples.
  • Has this project learnt from others?

Intangible Outcomes (optional)

If there were none or few tangible results/outcomes but this was critical foundation work:

  • Does the project enable future work, e.g. without this project, further work/improvements could not be undertaken?

Outstanding Delivery (20%)

  • On time?
  • Under budget and with improved efficiency?
  • Upheld the values and integrity of the Public Sector?

Above and Beyond (10%)

How did the team or individual go above and beyond their normal duties? Examples can include:

  • Collaboration. What type of collaboration or partnership was undertaken?
  • Innovation. What new approaches, thinking, tools or ideas were used to make this project or individual stand out?
  • Change. How effectively were stakeholders managed through the change?
  • Customer focus. How did the project or individual focus on the customer experience and what were the results?
  • Did this project succeed where others have failed?

How to nominate

Each agency has an awards ambassador who is available to help prepare and submit a competitive nomination. All nominations must be sent to an awards ambassador for submission and approval. If you have a nomination in mind, contact your awards ambassador ASAP to discuss the process of preparing a nomination. Please contact your Awards Ambassador to find out the date they need to receive a nomination by to facilitate approval before the closing date.
